Piggy’s guide to simple and cost effective web design.

In the 21st century it is fair to say that virtually every small business, charitable group or club needs a website of some type.  Unfortunately the technical capability of business owners and club volunteers is variable and funds are often distinctly limited.

Excellent web design companies are plentiful but telling the difference between good and bad companies can be difficult if your own knowledge of this area is limited.  One approach is to examine sites which the company have already built and see if they follow the basic  principles of good web design.  Fiona Storey has been good enough to provide Piggybank News with a short slideshow highlighting the main things to look for.

Piggy says “the majority of home based businesses, sole traders and clubs only need a very simple website so make sure that you are not paying for things you don’t need.”

If finances are tight and you need to build a site yourself then one of the simplest and most cost effective ways to do this is by using blogging software.

Sites such as wordpress.com and google blogger enable you to use ready made templates to create your web presence and will host them free of charge.

Piggybank News is an example of a classic wordpress hosted blog but it is also perfectly possible to create a “blog” which looks more like a standard website.  Have a look at this club “website” for an example of a wordpress blog which actually uses the same template as Piggybank News but has been set up to look like an ordinary site.  www.101club.wordpress.com
